Located near the Periyar River, Thattekad Bird Sanctuary expands over 25 square kilometres north of the river. The sanctuary has a vast variety of birds both forest birds as well as the water birds. One of the best known ornithologist, Salim Ali described this place as the richest bird habitat of peninsular India. The sanctuary is thronged by a lot of visitors during the peak season given the variety of birds that come here for winters.
