Things To Do Details

Overview

Located 18 km north of Marayoor, Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is one of twelve Wildlife Sanctuaries among the Protected areas of Kerala. This well-maintained sanctuary is located at a distance of 60 kilometres from Munnar in the rain shadow region of the Western Ghats of Kerala. Towards Marayoor, the park spreads over an area of 90.44 sq. km. The sanctuary is covered with dense green foliage making it look much bigger than it really is. Due to the significant differences in altitude and rainfall, it has a wide range of habitat types like dry thorny forest, deciduous forests, sholas, riparian types and grasslands that are interspersed over hillocks, plains, rocks and cliffs providing suitable habitats for varied forms of life. The rivers make this place ideal for different varieties of birds along with endangered giant grizzled squirrel, leopards, tigers, peacocks, elephants, reptiles, monkeys and exotic butterflies. If you want to trek remember that a prior permission is required to enter the sanctuary for trekking from the forest office in Munnar. Apart from trekking, you can also enjoy scenic beauty of Thooyanam Waterfalls and camping with the sanctuary.
