Thrissur Pooram, with its extravagant pomp and pageantry, has earned a kingly status among the numerous festivals of Kerala. This is perhaps the best-known Kerala festival among travelers worldwide. The ceremonies during the festival are an artistic blend of rituals and aesthetics. The festival highlights include, among other things, grand pageants of 15 caparisoned elephants each by two friendly rival teams. It will be followed by kudamattom, an event unmatched for its competitive spirit and aesthetics in which sequined parasols in bright colours are displayed atop the caparisoned elephants lined up on both sides. Spectators cheer as parasols in different colours and fashion are displayed one after another in amazing speed. Chendamelam and panchavadyam performances by leading performers add to the charm of the festival. In the night, the temple courtyard and the adjacent roads and buildings get packed with hundreds of thousands to witness a sparkling firework, the grand finale of the celebration.
