The Thrissur Pooram has a special allure. Shakthan Thampuran conceived of the event to counter the temple’s priestly aristocracy; it was to be a people’s festival. The Pooram is held outside the Vadakkunathan Temple, in April-May. Beautifully caparisoned elephants with gold ornaments in two processions represent the Thiruvambadi and Paramekkavu temples. At the centre of each group, the principal elephant carries image of the temple’s deity.
